The formula

Melt value = weight in grams × purity × spot price per gram.

Purity comes from the karat. 14K gold is 58.5% gold, so a 10 gram 14K chain holds 5.85 grams of pure gold. Multiply that by the live price per gram and you have its melt value: — right now.

Our minimum offer on that chain is 70% of melt, or — today.

Weighing at home

  • Use a digital kitchen or postal scale and zero it first.
  • Weigh items in a small bowl if they won’t sit still, then subtract the bowl.
  • Leave out anything that isn’t gold, like a watch movement or a large stone, if you can remove it.

Gold calculator questions

How accurate is the gold calculator?

The math is exact for the weight and purity you enter. The two things that can change your final number are the real purity, which we confirm by testing, and the weight of non-gold parts like stones, springs and solder, which we exclude.

Which weight unit should I use?

Grams are the most precise. Jewelers use pennyweight (dwt). Bullion uses troy ounces, which are 31.1 grams. Kitchen and postal scales show regular ounces, which are 28.35 grams, so pick “Ounces (kitchen scale)” if that is what you used. Mixing these up makes an estimate about 10% wrong.

What do the three numbers mean?

Melt value is the pure gold content at today’s spot price. The pawn shop figure is 40% of melt, a common counter offer. Our minimum is 70% of melt when you request your quote from the calculator.

How often does the price update?

Every 60 seconds while the page is open. The time of the last update is shown under the calculator.

Can I add several items at once?

Yes. Press “Add another item” for each piece. Each row can have its own karat and weight, and the totals add up automatically.
